Punjab government unveils date for local government elections

LAHORE - The Punjab government was planning to hold elections of Panchayats and Neighborhood Councils by June 2020 for which work on the delamination of Local Bodies would start in the next month.
It was stated by the Punjab Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Local Government Raja Basharat while presiding over a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Transition of Local Bodies system on Wednesday.
Secretary Local Government (LG) Saif Anjum and Additional Secretary LG Shahid Zaman briefed the meeting pertaining road map of the transition process.
Raja Basharat said that the new local government system was a beautiful reflection of the prime minister's vision and assurance of the transfer of power to the grassroots level.
He directed the departments to make efficient efforts to succeed the new Local Government system.
He also directed the local government department to start work on delimitation immediately and take solid steps to remove objections raised by Election Commission of Pakistan on the Local Government Act 2019.
Earlier, in the briefing, it was told that the divisional as well as district transition teams would assist the provincial transition team and committee in execution oftransition plan.
It was further told that working groups comprising departments concerned would be made to develop interdepartmental communication channels.
The secretary LG told that after the completion of delimitation, the Election Commission would be contacted for further process. He said that the identification and distribution of assets, staff and offices would likely be completed by the end of this year.
