ISLAMABAD: (APP) Three political parties including Jamiat Ulema Islam, Balochistan National Party and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party opposed the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2017 moved in the Senate on Wednesday.
The bill was moved to the House by Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid to validate continuation of military courts in the court to try terrorists. The bill was agreed upon by major political parties during the consultation process continued for last two months.
Speaking on the bill, JUI Senator Maulana Ata-ur-Rehman said there is no justification to link religion with terrorism as a terrorist is a terrorist, whether he is bearing turban and beard or is clean shaved.
He said any single segment of the society cannot be targeted under any law as he stated all religious scholars in the country have already issued decree not to support any armed struggle in the country.
The BNP Senator Jehanzeb Jamaldini said the government should strengthen the judicial system as well as the parliamentary democracy instead of bringing such amendments.
His party had all the respects for armed forces, he added.
PKMAP Senator Usman Kakar speaking on the bill said there is dire need to further strengthen judiciary instead of enacting the military courts law.
Replying to their points, the minister said, the government tried to address their apprehensions at the committee level and an utmost effort was made to evolve consensus on the issue.
