LAHORE – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to nominateShehbaz Sharif as it’s new party head, media reports have surfaced.
Earlier the name of Begum Kalsoom Nawaz was revealed for the partypresident slot however according to the sources in order to save the partyfrom a split the name of Shahbaz Sharif is being finalised.
Sources privy to PML-N claimed that the party leaders agreed unanimously toappoint Shehbaz Sharif as PML-N president. It was added that all keymatters will be decide by Nawaz Sharif himself who will keep his identityas the party chief without being formally declared.
Since Shehbaz Sharif is the senior most leader in the party, he will beasked to come forward to rule the party, the source claimed.
The ruling party’s session to elect the president will be held right afterSenate elections. Earlier, it was told that the Punjab CM was the onenominated as PML-N candidate for premiership.
According to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rules, a party has toelect its president within 45 days. It was earlier reported that ECPbarred barred (PMLN) from contesting Senate elections, dismissing PMLN’spetition pertaining to issuance of new tickets.
In a general council session of PML-N, Shehbaz Sharif is likely to beappointed as party head, the sources affirmed.
Supreme Court disqualified as president of the ruling Pakistan MuslimLeague-Nawaz (PML-N) in the verdict regarding petitions against ElectionAct of 2017, after his ouster as PM. While announcing the verdict, the apexcourt said that a person who doesn’t qualify on Article 62 and 63 of theconstitution can also not hold the office of presidency of any politicalparty. “Ineligible person cannot hold the office of party presidency,” thecourt said. SC has also annulled all decisions made by Nawaz Sharif as theparty head.
