Turkey, Iran and Iraq have agreed to consider counter-measures against Kurdish northern Iraq over a planned independence referendum.
In a joint statement carried by the Turkey's official news agency on Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, and their Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari said the referendum will not benefit the Kurdish Regional government in northern Iraq and endanger gains that Iraq made against Islamic State.
Meanwhile, the United States has also strongly opposed plans by northern Iraq's Kurdish regional government to hold an independence referendum next week.
In a statement issued by the State Department, Washington urged Iraqi Kurdish leaders to accept UN and US-facilitated dialogue process with the Baghdad government.
