Prominent US daily the Wall Street Journal has slammed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's U-turn on farm laws following the massive protests by farmers.
In an article, the paper wrote that the move is a face saving measure clearly motivated by the concern that angry farmers will endanger Modi's Bharati Janata Party in elections next year in states such as Uttar Pradesh.
The paper reports that despite Modi's withdrawal of laws, the protesting farmers show no signs of relenting, and plans are underway for marches in state capitals and toward Parliament on 26th of this month.
Meanwhile, the main farmer union Samyukt Kisan Morcha says it is closely watching the repeal process and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called the decision a victory against injustice.
