LAHORE: The Panama case controversy revolving around the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and family does not seem to die down soon as now lawyers have opened up a new front against the premier.
The lawyer community on Saturday demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign within seven days and announced to launch a movement after May 27 if their demand was not accepted.
In a nine-point declaration at the All Pakistan Lawyers Representatives Convention organised by the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) in collaboration with the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in the wake of Panamagate verdict, the lawyers also announced to launch a comprehensive campaign for accountability of all public officials who have been involved in financial improprieties and corruption through offshore companies or otherwise.
The PML-N supporters tried to ransack the convention but the organisers succeeded in holding the convention and issued a nine-point declaration.
The declaration demanded that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should immediately resign from his office to facilitate a fair and independent inquiry against him by the joint investigation team (JIT). In case the prime minister fails to resign within seven days by May 27, the lawyers will launch a nationwide campaign for his ouster.
The declaration maintained that all bar associations throughout Pakistan will hoist black flags and establish protest camps at their premises on Thursdays during the holy month of Ramazan.
NAB chairman and FIA director general should immediately be removed from their offices because the Supreme Court had already censured them in its judgment in the Panamagate case.
The convention announced to form a national action committee (NAC) headed by SCBA President Rasheed A Rizvi and consisting of presidents of Lahore High Court Bar Association, Sindh High Court Bar Association, Peshawar High Court Bar Association, Balochistan High Court Bar Association, Islamabad High Court Bar Association, High Court Bar Association of Rawalpindi, Multan, Bahawalpur, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Abbottabad, DI Khan, Bannu, Swat and Nasirabad, Lahore Bar Association, Karachi Bar Association, Balochistan Bar Association and Peshawar Bar Association.
A meeting of the national action committee will be convened immediately after the holy month of Ramazan to announce steps and measures for the lawyers' movement against corruption and for resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
