India gets a big blow from US over crisis with Canada

US authorities have maintained close communication with their Canadian counterparts regarding allegations implicating the Indian government in the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. A senior State Department official, speaking on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation and urged India to collaborate with the probe.

The official stated, "We've maintained close contact with our Canadian counterparts concerning this matter. We express deep concern about these allegations and emphasize the need for a comprehensive and transparent investigation. We call upon the Indian Government to actively cooperate with this inquiry."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted that credible allegations linking New Delhi's agents to the assassination were under active pursuit, a claim India promptly dismissed as baseless.

This dispute further strains diplomatic relations that have been deteriorating over the years, notably due to New Delhi's concerns regarding Sikh separatist activities in Canada. Additionally, it jeopardizes trade relations, with discussions on a proposed trade agreement put on hold the previous week
