Pakistani cardinal Joseph Coutts exposes US and EU hypocrisy on oppression of Christians in the region

Pakistani Cardinal Joseph Coutts blamed the “duplicity, the hypocrisy,” of the United States and the European Union for the oppression of Christians in the region.

Pakistani Cardinal spoke with Crux in Rome on Monday during which he also discussed the rejection of a bill by Pakistan’s parliament regarding banning forced conversions.

He also discussed the present government’s decision to enforce a “uniform curriculum” in the country.

“As we’re going through it, we have found that it’s not the kind of curriculum that is preparing the future generation to live in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society,” he said.

He said that the idea of a uniform curriculum is to promote Islam but it is at the cost of neglecting the history of Hinduism and Christianity.

The cardinal was of the view that whatever happens in the West, the Christian minority pays for it here.

“They see us (Christians) as the devil, the product of colonialism. If anything happens in the West, for instance, God forbid, a blasphemy case somewhere, we were on pins and needles, because one more church to be attacked, a few more Christians will be brutally killed”.

He said that Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, made a beautiful speech during the first session of the first parliament in which he said, “We are now free, you are free. You’re free to go to your mosques, to your temples, or any place of worship”.
