UN Chief makes an offer to Pakistan and India

NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated offer of dialogues between Pakistan and India.

He expressed the hope that Pakistan and India would be able to engage in a meaningful dialogue to resolve their disputes.

In a press conference in New York, answering to a question posed by a Pakistani journalist regarding the constant tension between the neighbouring countries and recent efforts made by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan to hold peace talks with India the UN chief wished that Pakistan and India would “engage in a meaningful dialogue”.

Referring to the damning 14th June UN report calling for the establishment of a ‘commission of inquiry’ to investigate the grave human rights violations in Indian-occupied Kashmir, the UN chief said that “The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has produced recently a very detailed report. So the UN has clearly done its job in that regard.”

In his statement, Guterres said “I’ve been offering my good offices in relation to the dialogue between the two countries that, until now, had no conditions of success.

“I hope that the importance of both India and Pakistan is such in international affairs, I hope that the two countries will be able to engage in a meaningful dialogue,” he added.

Later, Guterres wrote on Twitter: “We need international cooperation more than ever, but simply saying this will not make it happen.
