U.S. Defense Secretary warns of Russian meddling in Macedonia referendum

WASHINGTON: U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has arrived in Macedonia with a warning that Russia was attempting to meddle in a referendum.

Talking to reporters en route to Macedonian capital, Skopje, Mattis said U.S. does not want to see Russia doing there what they have tried to do in so many other countries.

Macedonia has set Sept. 30 for a referendum to change its name to Republic of North Macedonia which would largely clear the path for it to join NATO and European Union.
