Mufti Abdul Qavi arrested in Qandeel Baloch murder case

ISLAMABAD - Mufti Abdul Qavi, a suspect in the murder of social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch, was arrested on Wednesday after a district and sessions court in Multan rejected his bail application.

The cleric had earlier fled the court premises after the court turned down his request to grant him bail.

Earlier, defence and prosecution counsels argued on the case but District and Sessions judge Ameer Muhammad Khan denied the bail application and directed action against the suspect under sections 302 and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Qavi, who was censured for appearing in ‘selfie’ photographs with murdered social media celebrity Qandeel, has been investigated in connection with her killing. He is accused of instigating the model’s brother for killing her.

He was also suspended from the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after the photographs were published and became part of the police investigation into the celebrity’s murder. The cleric has repeatedly denied any involvement in Qandeel’s murder but had said he would present himself to police for questioning if summoned.
