NAB sought time from Accountability Court for submitting response against Asif Zardari

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday sought time from the accountability court of Islamabad for submitting response against former president Asif Ali Zardari’s plea for acquittal under the recently promulgated accountability ordinance, in the reference pertaining to mega money laundering.
Accountability court judge Azam Khan was hearing the case. The accountability watchdog was expected to submit its response against the application of Asif Zardari today.
When he was asked that how long it would take to him to submit the response, NAB prosecutor Waseem Javed apprised that he did not receive any reply from the institution’s headquarters, therefore he should be given some time. Following which, Azam Khan directed him to submit a response by December 6 and adjourned the hearing till then.
The court also approved Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and others’ request for immunity from attending the court hearing for one day.
In 2019, Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairperson Zardari was arrested on corruption charges in a major blow to his party.
This should be noted that the National Accountability (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 restricts the jurisdiction of the NAB in matters related to finance and governance.
On October 14, the PPP co-chairperson had expressed confidence that his party would form the next government in the country.
Speaking to the media after an appearance before an accountability court in Islamabad, Zardari had said the “next turn” to form a government in the country would be of the PPP.
