Why is India afraid of holding plebiscite in Kashmir, asks Indian actor turned politician Kamal Hasan

NEW DELHI - Indian Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s comments on holding a plebiscite in Kashmir has landed him in yet another controversy.

Speaking to school students in Chennai on Sunday, the star spoke of an article he had written in his magazine three decades ago in which he discussed whether holding a plebiscite in Kashmir could help address the problems in the region. He also questioned why the Indian government was ‘afraid’ of holding the plebiscite.

His party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, released a statement on Monday morning saying Kamal Hasan’s remarks had been quoted out of context and had been twisted.

The statement expressed solidarity with security personnel and affirmed its belief that Kashmir is an integral part of India.

Kamal Haasan is not a stranger to controversy. His speeches and remarks have landed him in trouble in multiple instances in the past.
