Afghan air force kills 20 militants in eastern province

KABUL: At least 20 Taliban militants were killed following airstrikes in eastern province of Paktika, the Afghan Ministry of Defense said Wednesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the strikes were launched by Afghan Air Force in Omna district, southern of provincial capital Sharan city on Tuesday.
The strikes also destroyed three Taliban's hideouts in the mountainous province.

Afghan security forces, backed by the US-led NATO coalition troops, have increased ground and air offensives against militants in the past few months as the country is preparing for parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on Oct. 20.

At the upcoming elections on Saturday, more than 54,000 Afghan army soldiers and police personnel would be deployed to provide security for 5,100 polling centers across the country.
The militant group has yet to respond to the report.
