Kurram Tangi dam construction status  

ISLAMABAD: (APP) Following award of the contract for Kurram Tangi Dam Project (Stage-I), the contractor has been mobilized to the site to start construction work on the project.

This was stated by the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (R) during his visit to Kurram Tangi Dam site located in North Waziristan Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman said that Kurram Tangi Dam is a significant project for socio-economic uplift of the people of the far flung areas of FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He directed the project management to make it sure that the project is completed within stipulated timeframe.

It is worth mentioning that Kurram Tangi Dam is a multi-purpose project with gross water storage capacity of 1.2 million acre feet (MAF) and power generation capacity of 83.4 mega watt (MW). WAPDA will complete the project in two stages. Stage-I will be completed in about three years. On completion of the Stage-I, more than 16 thousand acres of land in North Waziristan Agency will be irrigated, while about 18 MW of electricity will also be generated.

Earlier, WAPDA Chairman visited Mohmand Dam Project site in Mohmand Agency of FATA. During the visit, he said that detailed engineering design of Mohmand Dam is likely to be completed in February 2017. Afterwards, the processes will be initiated for approval of the project by the Government of Pakistan, financial arrangements and award of contract.

The Chairman said that in view of its benefits, Mohamand Dam is a project of paramount importance, as it will not only store water and generate electricity but also help mitigate floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera.

It is pertinent to mention that Mohamand Dam Project has a gross water storage capacity of 1.3 MAF and power generation capacity of 800 MW.
