Electricity prices in Pakistan register another massive hike

The recent developments in Pakistan's electricity sector suggest an impending increase in electricity prices, with the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) filing an application for tariff adjustment with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), as reported by ARY News.

This application follows closely after NEPRA's notification of a Rs4.92 per unit increase in electricity prices. The CPPA's request specifically targets a Rs2.94 per unit rise in fuel price adjustment charges for March 2024 bills.

NEPRA is expected to schedule a hearing to review the application, after which a decision regarding the proposed tariff hike will be reached.

The recent NEPRA notification on April 8 outlined a Rs4.92 per unit increase in monthly fuel adjustment charges, applicable to February bills and reflected in April 2024 invoices. Notably, this increase does not affect consumers of K-Electric and lifeline users.

Additionally, NEPRA had previously approved a Rs2.75 per unit increase in electricity tariffs nationwide, effective from April, under fuel price adjustment (FCA). This decision was subsequently forwarded to the federal government for official notification of the tariff adjustment.
