Economic Coordination Committee to approve the import of duty free vehicles

Recent media reports suggest that the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), which is set to take place tomorrow, is likely to approve the amendment that suggests allowing duty-free vehicles to the disabled people. The meeting will be led by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

Reports state that the meeting will focus on three key points:

- Commerce Division’s proposal for amendment in the policy pertaining to import of customs duty-free cars for disabled individuals. - A proposal to be put forth by the Federal Education and Professional Training, seeking approval of a technical supplementary grant worth Rs. 96.155 million for the subject “Deeni Madaris”. - A proposal seeking the publication of rolling spectrum strategy 2020-2023 to be presented by the Information Technology and Telecommunications division.

Under the current policy, any person who is a Pakistani national and is suffering from a physical disability, which does not include a mental disorder or an old age disability, can apply for the said scheme of duty-free car import for the disabled. However, the following are some of the provisions that the applicant must abide by:

- The impairment can only be physical. A mentally ill or a person with old-age disabilities cannot avail the said scheme. - The applicant must have a valid driver’s license. - The income of the applicant should be between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 100,000. - Should not have imported a duty-free car or bought a local car at a concessional tax rate in the past 5 years. - Has not had his/her application rejected by the board in past 2 years.
