PEMRA fines private TV channel for baseless allegations

ISLAMABAD: (APP) Pakistan Eelectronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)'s Council of Complaints (COC) has recommended a fine Rs 1,000,000 to Channel 24 for airing false and malicious statements about the family of Anwar Aziz in its programme "Khara Such" on May 25, 2016 and disposed of the matter.

According to a press release issued here Thursday, the recommendation came in the 67th meeting of the council held on the other day at the Regional Office Lahore and chaired by Dr Mehdi Hassan.
Regarding the complaint filed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr Haider Ashraf against ARY News, Capital News, City 42 and Waqt News for broadcasting of 'old/fake' footages taken from social media for the sake of sensationalism, panic and harassment among the general public, the council adjourned the matter due to non-appearance of the complainant and non-submission of reply by the channels.
With regard to a complaint by Advocate Supreme Court Muhammad Akram Malik against Channel 92, the matter was adjourned till the next meeting of the COC Lahore due to non-appearance of the complainant.
PEMRA council of complaints established
The matter of District Police Officer Okara against Channel 92 for telecasting fake campaign against police officials of District Okara, the council adjourned the matter till next meeting of the COC with direction to appear alongwith evidences.
While hearing the complaint of Afzal Syed Ali against A-Plus program 'Jago Jago Subha Huwi', on October 27, 2016, the council recommended a fine Rs 100,000 to A-Plus for non-appearance before it.
In the matter of Malik Sanaullah resident of Gujranwala and Channel 5, the grievance of the complainant was addressed by Channel 5 for not handing over the car won through lucky draw in program Marhaba Ramzan' on June 18, 2016.
The council recommended a fine Rs 100,000 to Silver Screen for change of frequency without prior approval of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and airing of objectionable content due to change of frequency.
While hearing the complaint against M/s Golden Star Cable Network Kasur, the council recommended a fine Rs 50,000 to M/s Golden Star Cable Network Kasur for violations of PEMRA Laws.
Other council members including Dr Sughara Sadaf, Dr Mubashar Nadeem, Dr Lubna Zaheer, Iftikhar Ahmad Tarar, Fuzia Viqar and Dr M Safdar Rehman (RGM- Lhr/ Secretary COC) were also present in the meeting.
