Iran Turkey seal key border agreement

ANKARA*– Iran and Turkey signed a border cooperation agreement on Fridayfollowing a four-day joint high border commission.*

Turkish Directorate General for Bilateral Political Affairs(Maritime-Aviation-Borders) Burak Ozugergin and Director General ofinternational and legal affairs in Iran’s Foreign Ministry Abbas Baqerpoorco-presided the meeting, IRNA has reported.

The document has emphasized adopting further measure to confront borderincidents and to fight terrorist groups and gangs as well as smuggling.

Some other coordination on border issues, including creating maps and dataon the border line and establishing a joint geodesy on the border regionwere agreed on.

The Turkish and Iranian parties both stressed on the implementation of theprotocol related to the joint use of Sari-su and Karah-su waters withrespect to the amount of water coming to Iran.

The meeting was held following a series of consultations after a six-yearhiatus. It was agreed that the next session to be held in Tehran in 2019.
