In Saudi Arabia, Two Army officers executed over treason charges

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the execution of two military personnel, charging them with military treason and other offenses, according to the state news agency (SPA). On Thursday, SPA reported that these individuals were subject to due process, having been referred to a designated court where they received all necessary legal guarantees. They admitted to the allegations against them, leading to their convictions and subsequent death sentences.

Unfortunately, specific details regarding the case were not disclosed by the Saudi Press Agency. This development occurs within the context of a significant increase in executions within Saudi Arabia. Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Director, Heba Morayef, revealed that the country had already executed 100 individuals earlier in the year.

Furthermore, 2022 marked a grim record for Saudi Arabia, with 196 executions – the highest annual count in the last three decades, as documented by Amnesty International. This figure was three times higher than the previous year and a shocking seven times more than 2020.

In November 2022, Saudi authorities lifted a moratorium on executions related to drug offenses, as announced by the Saudi Human Rights Commission. This moratorium had been in effect since January 2020. These developments raise concerns and scrutiny regarding human rights and due process within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
