Thar coal project block II: A mega project and economic lifeline

MITHI (APP): Chief Executive Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), Shamsuddin Shaikh said Thar coal was a mega project which would resolve longstanding energy crisis of the country by generating thousands of megawat electricity.

Addressing a press conference at Mithi press club on Sunday, Shamsuddin Shaikh said people of Tharpakar were lucky enough to have 175 billion ton of coal reserves under their houses and deserted land out of 186 billion ton of all resrves of the country.

He said Sindh Engro Coal Company had the responsiblity to provide all basic facilities to the people of Tharparkar as best quality coal reserves were availabe here, adding in block II coal reserves were into the depth of 150 metres and drilling work was in progress, 40 metres drilling had been completed so far while remaing 110 metres work would soon be completed.

He informed that project of worth 210 billion dollar on Thar coal block 2 would be completed in next three years which would generate 600 megawat electricty. There were 2000 employees working on Thar coal blockII, out of which 1000 were local people of the area, while 700 Chinese and 300 people belonging to other parts of the country, he added.

Thar coal fired power plant : Status update

SECMC Chief Executive said for completion of work on phase I of the Thar coal block II, 5000 people would be employed out of which 2500 people of Thar would be provided jobs. For this purpose people of Tharpakar were being provided trainings so that they could be able to get the jobs in Thar coal field.

He told that in phase I of the Thar coal block II, which consisted of 6000 acres of land, 3500 acre was a survey land. Payment had been made to the owners of 2700 acre of land while payment of owners of 800 acre of land had been deposited into the governemnt account as the land record was still to be completed.

He assured that due to construction of dam at Ghorano no one would be hurted and neither their crops would be harmed. He said decision to construct Dam at Ghorano had been taken with consensus of the people of the area and the Governemnt of Sindh.

He said some people were observing hunger strike at Karachi Press Club and it was a matter of concern for us because women and children were also among them. He said in future protesting people would also be provided all basic facilities.

He informed that SECMC was working for provision of educational as well as health facilities for the people of Tharparkar. For this purpose schools were being built in Mithi and Islamkot which would be completed by 2018.

Engro Company was planning to establish a school in the name of Engro at every Taluka headquarter so that people of Tharparkar could be provided educational facilities.
