On Tuesday night, tragedy struck in Karachi's Gulistan-e-Jauhar as a 46-year-old religious cleric, Sheikh Zia ur Rehman, met a tragic end. This devout cleric, who also held the role of an administrator at the Jamia Abu Bakr Madrassah, was brutally gunned down in a shocking incident. The dreadful occurrence transpired in close proximity to Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 16, leaving a community in shock and mourning.

The police swiftly initiated an investigation, delving into various potential motives behind this heinous act, including the possibility of targeted killing. At the crime scene, they uncovered a significant piece of evidence – 11 spent shell casings from two different firearms, a 9mm pistol, and a 30 bore weapon. These findings only added to the perplexity surrounding the tragic event.

Meanwhile, in a disheartening string of events, this incident comes not long after the assassination of religious leader Saleem Khatri, who was fatally shot near Bilal Colony in Karachi by four suspects on motorcycles. Additionally, Karachi had previously witnessed the tragic murder of Maulana Abdul Qayyum Sufi, another religious scholar and member of the Pakistan Ulema Association, who fell victim to unidentified armed assailants in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 9.

His life was tragically cut short while returning home after leading Fajar prayers, and he had also held a prominent position as the head of the Noorani Islamic Centre at Jamia Masjid Muhammadia. These events highlight the concerning vulnerability faced by religious figures in the region, emphasizing the need for increased security and vigilance in their communities
