Climate change, environmental pollution threats to health

LAHORE: Principal Ameeruddin Medical College Prof Mohammad Tayyab has said that environmental pollution and
climate changes are big threats to human lives and we all should perform our duties in this regard and take preventive measures.

He said that for the last some years, another threat had occurred in the shape of smog which also needs our immediate attention and people should opt for short- and long-term measures to meet the challenge.

Prof Mohammad Tayyab was addressing the seminar at the Lahore General Hospital (LGH) for creating awareness among people.
He said that steps like burning garbage and waste and fireworks also add up to air pollution, turning the region into
a pollution zone.He said that if people decide to remain careful, they could easily avoid the threats like smog.

Principal Ameeruddin Medical College also asked doctors of Lahore General Hospital to spread such positive messages
through patients so that they could keep their environment clean and healthy for themselves.

Prof Tayyab appreciated holding of the seminar, which would certainly help create awareness among masses.
Addressing the seminar, other speakers, Prof Ghias-un-Nabi Tayyab, Prof Agha Shabbir Ali, Prof Muhammad Moin and Dr Irfan Malik said that, in fact, smog was merger of fog and smoke and that the air pollution starts from the use of coal as the fuel.

They called upon people to use maximum water in a day and avoid going out unnecessarily.

Similarly, motorcyclists and cyclists should use masks and women should keep doors and windows closed at their houses.
Medical Superintendent of Lahore General Hospital Dr Mahmud Salahuddin also addressed the seminar and highlighted its aims and objectives. He said that the institution always takes lead to arrange such kinds of useful gatherings for which efforts of doctors and nurses were commendable.

An awareness walk was also held from Punjab Institute of Neuro-Sciences to the main building of Lahore General Hospital in which participants were holding placards inscribed with slogans about preventive measures against smog and air pollution.

Masks were also distributed among the walk participants.
