Growers appeal SHC to take action against sugar mills

HYDERABAD: The President Sindh Abadgar Itehad, Nawab Zubair Talpur, has appealed to Sindh High Court for taking action against sugar mill owners on charge of contempt of the court.

Addressing a news conference along with General Secretary Muhammad Anwaar here at Hyderabad Press club on Monday, he said that the Sindh High Court had fixed the cane rate of Rs. 160 per maund while Pakistan Sugar Mill Association (PSMA) also agreed on such price.

He expressed regrets that sugar mill owners now violating the orders of the Sindh High court and forcing the growers to sale their cane at Rs.130/- per maund and in upper Sindh Rs.100/- to Rs.80/- per maund, which he said the clear contempt of the orders.

He also alleged that Sindh Government has still not set up the procurement centres for purchase of wheat crop despite the fact that thrashing of wheat has started in the province. The government had fixed the wheat price at Rs.1320/- per maund but the traders are purchasing the same at Rs. 1100/- per maund, he said and added that it was causing huge economical losses to wheat growers.

He demanded Sindh High Court to take action against the sugar mill owners who involved in violation of the court  orders else, he warned, Sindh Abadgar Itehad possessed the right to launch protest movement. APP/AFP
