UN alarms over worsening food crisis in Sahel region

UNITED NATION: The United Nations has alarmed over a worsening food crisis in the Sahel region.

In a statement, United Nations Aid Chief Mark Lowcock said nearly six million people are struggling for food in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal, where 1.6 million children are suffering from severe malnutrition.

He said food stocks have already run out for millions of people while families are cutting down on meals, withdrawing children from schools and going without essential health treatment to save food for money.

UN aid Chief appealed to donors for contributions to help scale up aid efforts in the region.
