Lowari tunnel closed for all sorts of traffic: PDMA

PESHAWAR (APP): Lowari tunnel have been closed for traffic due to heavy snow fall and the largest district Chitral is cut-off from the rest of country, a spokesman of the PDMA Latif-ur-Rehman while talking to APP confirmed.

However, people can go to and from Chitral through Lowari Tunnel on Friday from 7 am in the morning to 7 pm in the evening, he added.

He said there was around 30 passenger vehicles, which also carrying women and children, were struck due to heavy snow fall and a request has been made to the tunnel authorities to pass-on the vehicles, otherwise the route was completely closed, he explain.

Latif-ur-Rehman disclosed that heavy snowfall in the district, the communication system has been badly affected and most of the link roads including Lowari tunnel has been closed for all types of vehicular transportation, causing much inconvenience to the commuters.

Lowari tunnel the only road communication liking Chitral with other parts of the country has once again been closed after heavy overnight rain and snowfall, he said. Scores of vehicles including passenger carriers with men, women and children on board are seen stuck up outside the tunnel in extremely chill weather, while there is no relief in sight.

We have made request to the concerned officials and they allowed pass-on all the struck vehicles only, he confirmed. Similarly due to heavy snow fall, the roads were blocked in District Shangla and the district administration have started removing of snow from the roads resulted in clearing of roads up to Alpori, he informed.

He also cautioned the people not to use the roads lead to Chitral because of heavy snow and it may cause danger to the precious human live due to slippery roads. He said the Loweri Tunnel will be only open on Friday.
