*ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan dismissed contempt of court petitionagainst former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief MinisterShehbaz Sharif on Tuesday.*
Petitioner Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi moved the court to take action againstNawaz Sharif and his family members for anti-judiciary outbursts followinghis disqualification in Panama case.
Nawaz Sharif delivered speeches also against the six members of JointInvestigation Team (JIT) appointed by the apex court to probe the chargesanchored in Panama Papers, the petitioner submitted.
Akhtar also said Nawaz Sharif ridiculed the accountability process by thejudiciary.
Heading a three-member SC bench, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice MianSaqib Nisar said that the erstwhile premier used inappropriate wordsagainst the JIT, not the court; hence, proceedings regarding a contemptoffence cannot be launched against him.
However, he stressed the court has the record of Nawaz Sharif’scontemptuous remarks against the judiciary, adding the court will hear thecase against Nawaz at an appropriate time.
In today’s hearing, the bench disposed of contempt petitions againstvarious politicians including Federal Minister for Railways Saad Rafique,former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)leader Firdous Ashiq Awan, former Senate chairman Nayyar Bukhari andCaptain (rted.) Safdar.
