A request was submitted to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, urging an expedited hearing of the bail petition on behalf of former Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi. Kaisara Elahi, Elahi's wife, filed this petition in the apex court, asserting that his arrest was unlawful and emphasizing the fundamental constitutional right to freedom of movement.
The petition implored the court to promptly address the bail plea. Regarding the withdrawal of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) order, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Islamabad informed the high court that the detention order issued for the PTI president had been revoked.
During today's hearing presided over by Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Elahi's petition against his MPO detention was considered, with DC Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon present. Although Elahi and the DC were summoned to court, the PTI president was absent due to his incarceration in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail. The DC reported that the MPO detention order had been lifted, leading to the dismissal of the former Punjab CM's petition by the IHC. Additionally, the court instructed the DC to provide information about the current FIR under which Elahi was detained.
Last week, Elahi's wife filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing the Lahore High Court's decision to dismiss a plea seeking her husband's release following his rearrest. In her petition, she named the caretaker Punjab government, Punjab interior secretary, and the provincial inspector general of police as respondents.
She requested the apex court to overturn the LHC's September 6 decision and secure her husband's release. She also sought restraining orders from the Supreme Court to prevent her husband's possible rearrest in any undisclosed case and highlighted her husband's age and his lifelong commitment to the country's betterment. The petition further detailed the Anti-Corruption Department's bribery case against her husband and described the police's behavior during the investigation.
