ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution with majority vote expressing its concern over the possibility of appointment of a disqualified person as office-bearer of political parties.
The resolution moved by Leader of the Opposition Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and others was opposed by treasury benches. However, the house passed it with 52 votes in favour.
Opposing the resolution, Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid said every political party had the right to elect its leader and there was nothing wrong in electing a disqualified person as office bearer of a political party. The resolution must not be passed by the Senate as opposition was only trying for point-scoring on a law that had already passed by both houses of the parliament, he added.
Leader of the House Raja Zafar ul Haq said both houses of the parliament had already passed a law to the effect and the resolution would not make any difference.
Senator Saud Majeed urged the house to avoid making a law, which it had passed, controversial. No resolution against settled issues should be passed, he added.
