Martyrdom anniversary of Maqbool Butt observed on both sides of LoC

The 35th martyrdom anniversary of prominent Kashmiri leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt is being observed on both sides of the Line of Control on Monday.

Muhammad Maqbool Butt was hanged by the Indian authorities in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on this day in 1984.

Complete shutdown was observed in Occupied Kashmir, today, to mark the 35th martyrdom anniversary of prominent Kashmiri liberation leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt.

Call for the strike was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.

In a statement , the JRL said the struggle and sacrifices rendered by great leaders of Kashmiri freedom struggle are glorious chapter of Kashmir’s resistance history.

Meanwhile, in occupied Kashmir, Hurriyat leaders including Shabbir Ahmad Dar and Imtiyaz Ahmad Reshi, today, launched the signature campaign in Srinagar to press for the return of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.

While launching the campaign the leaders said, when Pakistan can return the body of Indian prisoner Sarabjeet Singh, India should also return the mortal remains of the martyred Kashmiri leaders.

In occupied Kashmir, resistance leaders and activists defying curfew-like restrictions, today, staged protest demonstrations to press for the return of mortal remains of Kashmiri martyred leaders, Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Mohammad Afzal Guru.

According to Kashmir Media Service, scores of the leaders and activists including women and children staged the protest in Srinagar.

The protesters raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The authorities had imposed curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar and other areas of the territory, today, on 35th martyrdom anniversary of Muhammad Maqbool Butt.

However, the protesters flouted the restrictions on assembling of four or more persons at a particular place in Srinagar and assembled at Lal Chowk to stage anti-India protests.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Kashmiri Americans and friends of Kashmir staged a big protest demonstration in front of the White House in connection with the martyrdom anniversaries of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the demonstrators urged the United States to help persuade Pakistan and India to initiate peace process along with the leadership of the people of Kashmir.

In Azad Kashmir, functions and rallies were held today to pay homage to Maqbool Butt Shaheed for his services and sacrifice for Kashmir liberation struggle.

In Muzaffarabad, different student’s organizations held a rally which culminated at Central Press Club.

Addressing the participants, speakers highlighted the services of the Shaheed leader for Kashmir liberation struggle.
