Pakistan’s Military Industrial Complex to be revamped for enhanced defence exports

The government is planning a number of new initiatives for the revival of Pakistan’s military-industrial complex that was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, the Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) issued a detailed report highlighting new policies for defense production and offsets. The ministry is also eyeing a complete internal restructuring to make the production unit ‘more efficient and viable.’ ------------------------------

The ministry is also looking to secure private sector investments in defense manufacturing.

Pakistan’s most prominent state-owned defense enterprises will also be reorganized and given greater independent control, the report said.

In line with government targets, the ministry is committed to supporting the development of an internationally competitive defense production sector.

These decisions, it says, are triggered by the growing requirements to locally source the needs of armed forces, increase employment opportunities, and reduce foreign reliance for defense products.

The ministry said it has prepared the policy draft, outlining manufacturing capabilities and targets, which will be released soon following final changes and approval. Moreover, the offset policy is also in the final stages and has been shared with stakeholders for feedback.
