SC refuses to issue stay order for Sharif family’s sugar mills

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has refused to issue a stay order against a Lahore High Court order for the relocation of three Sharif family sugar mills.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar is hearing the petition.
The CJP ordered to relocate illegal sugar mills to other areas.
Representatives of cane growers and counsel for the mills had told the bench that growers have been unable to sell their produce due to the suspension of sugar mills’ operations. They had requested that the bench issue a stay order against the operation of the Lahore High Court order so that the mills can resume crushing.
Aitezaz Ahsan, who is representing Jehangir Tareen, had, insisted that the mills be relocated in line with the Lahore High Court’s verdict. He had proposed that either the farmers be paid a premium ahead of the crushing or that Tareen be allowed to buy the produce.
The chief justice said that he would daily hear the matter in his chamber until a solution was found for the growers. Justice Nisar asked Ahsan to submit his proposals in writing.
