NEW YORK – Frustrated India has slammed the UN Security Council’s SanctionsCommittees, in an apparent reference to China repeatedly blocking NewDelhi’s bid to list Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar as a globalterrorist.
Addressing a UNSC debate on ‘Strengthening Multilateralism and the role ofthe United Nations’ Friday, India’s Permanent Representative to the UNAmbassador Syed Akbaruddin said even as the Council has spawned an entirerange of subordinate bodies, the functioning of this “subterraneanuniverse” of subordinate bodies has become “byzantine”.
“In an age where informed publics increasingly demand transparency frompublic institutions, the Sanctions Committees are the most egregiousexamples known to multilateralism in terms of their opacity and lack ofaccountability,” he said.
