World Migratory Bird Day observed in Pakistan

LAHORE: (APP) World Migratory Bird Day observed in Pakistan

 

World Migratory Birds Day was celebrated here at the Virtual University campus on Tuesday to pay attention to the migrating birds and stressing the need for their conservation and highlighting their role in preservation of nature.

 

The Department of Biology, Virtual University of Pakistan, in collaboration with the WWF Pakistan, organized a seminar at M A Jinnah Campus, Lahore in pursuit of its mandate of creating awareness among students and common people regarding environmental conservation issues.

 

WWF Pakistan Conservation Manager Ms Humera Aisha shared her views on the illegal killing and trade of the beautiful gift of the nature.

 

She briefed the audience that the day aims at highlighting the incredible number of migratory birds being lost each year as a result of illegal hunting and their trade.

 

These illegal activities are leading to the habitat loss of the migratory birds, which is threatening the species with extinction.

 

Prof Dr Muhammad Sharif Mughal, Subject Specialist, Faculty of Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of the migratory birds as they are adding beauty to the world.

 

He said that students are specially to be educated about respecting what the birds are providing to us, besides food and aesthetics.

 

Dr Fahad Rafiq, Instructor, Department of Biology, Virtual University of Pakistan, briefed the participants about the migratory birds routes, behaviour and the threats associated with their lives.

 

In addition to this, he briefly discussed the flyways of migratory birds right from Siberia to Pakistan and different risks associated with their flights.

 

A video documentary, prepared by the WWF-Pakistan, was shown on the occasion, depicting the illegal hunting and trade of migratory birds in natural sanctuaries of Pakistan.
