Frank Hoogerbeets, a Dutch scientist and seismologist associated with The Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGS), renowned for his previous precise earthquake predictions, has raised the prospect of another significant seismic event occurring in Afghanistan. This apprehension has arisen in the wake of a sequence of three earthquakes striking the country within a mere thirty-minute timeframe.
Hoogerbeets expressed his concerns regarding the situation, stating, "Aftershocks will likely persist in the upcoming days. While it appears that the earlier Mw 6.5 earthquake serves as the main shock, the potential for another powerful tremor remains.
It is prudent to remain extra vigilant, just in case," as conveyed through his communication platform 'X,' formerly known as Twitter.
Tragically, the recent earthquake has resulted in a casualty toll of at least 14 lives lost and 78 individuals injured. There are growing apprehensions that the number of fatalities might rise further, owing to reports of landslides and individuals trapped beneath the debris of collapsed structures.
Afghanistan remains susceptible to frequent seismic activity, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies in close proximity to the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
