ISLAMABAD - Asia Bibi, who was acquitted last year by the Supreme Court (SC) in a blasphemy case, has reportedly left Pakistan and departed for Canada on Tuesday night.
According to local media reports, Foreign Office sources confirmed Bibi has left Pakistan. Meanwhile, British Pakistani Christian Association has claimed in a statement that it has received confirmation from a British diplomat that Bibi has safely exited Pakistan. The statement further claimed that she is traveling to Canada to be reunited with her children.
Bibi, a mother of five, had been on death row since 2010. She was accused of blasphemy during a row over drinking water with women with whom she was working in a field. However, her petition was accepted by the SC which acquitted her and ordered her immediate release from prison.
A three-member bench headed by the former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar, comprising Judge Asif Saeed Khosa and Judge Mazhar Alam Khan, announced the verdict. The judgment read, “She shall be released from the jail forthwith if not required to be detained in connection with any other case
