TEHRAN: The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed that Iran has conducted multiple ballistic missile tests successfully on Tuesday ignoring the US sanctions imposed over its missile programme.
It claimed that the tests show Iran’s deterrent power and clears that Iran is ready to confront threats.
ISNA said “The test was intended to show Iran’s deterrent power and also the Islamic Republic’s ability to confront any threat against the (Islamic) Revolution, the state and the sovereignty of the country.”
The test named “The Power of Velayat” a reference to the religious doctrine of the Islamic Republic’s leadership.
The test comes two weeks after elections in Iran.
Iran is facing sanctions from US over its missile programme since the test of medium range Emad missile in October 2015.
International sanctions on Iran’s nuclear programme were lifted in January.
US department of treasury said in January “Iran’s ballistic missile programme poses a significant threat to regional and global security, and it will continue to be subject to international sanctions.”
