116 Model Courts across Pakistan start producing results to clear massive backlog

RAWALPINDI - The 116 Model Courts which have been set up across the country to provide speedy justice and to clear the massive backlog of cases decided 766 cases including 319 cases of murder and 447 narcotics during previous one week. According to a handout issued here by the Directorate of Public Relations, Director General Supreme Court Monitoring Cell Sohail Nasir said that in order to decide pending cases on priority statements of 3402 witnesses have also been recorded in different cases from April 1 to 6. According to details,36 model courts in Punjab disposed of 278 cases including recording the statements of 2500 witnesses, 27 KPK Model Courts decided 171 cases while recorded 552 witnesses statements. Similarly ,27 Model Courts in Sindh disposed of 92 cases and recorded 647 witnesses statements ,24 Baluchistan Model Courts decided 194 cases and recorded statements of 692 witnesses while two model courts of Islamabad disposed of 31 cases including recording statements of 86 witnesses. The Courts also imposed fine of around Rs 30 million on the accused, the statement said. The DG SC Monitoring Cell said that model courts were established on the directives of Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan and in accordance with the instruction of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa. Modern technique of proceedings have been adopted to decide old cases of murder and narcotics, he added. He said that the performance of model courts are being assessed on daily basis.
