Proactive foreign policy: Pakistan launches Parliamentary friendship groups

ISLAMABAD - Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi Thursday said Parliamentary Friendship Groups would enhance interaction of diplomatic corps and Foreign Office and help formulate and implement foreign policy objectives.

Speaking at an event to launch Parliamentary Friendship Groups here at Parliament House, he said when Friendship Groups would engage with diplomatic corps, they would act as bridge between the diplomatic corps and Foreign Office.

He said Parliament was the most important institution in democratic dispensation and its friendship groups had a significant role in promoting better understanding and bilateral relations with other countries.

He said the members of Parliament represent will of the people and people-centered relations were durable and lasting which could be promoted through the parliamentary groups.

Representatives in Parliament express will of people, he said and stressed, “We have to think out-of-box and throw up fresh ideas and share them with the Foreign Office.”

Parliamentary groups had a role to play to help the government achieve its foreign policy objectives, he added.
