Pakistan, UNDP launch project to protect people from glacial lake outburst floods

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched a thirty seven million dollars project to protect thirty million people from dangerous glacial lake outburst floods.

The project was launched at a ceremony in Islamabad, which was attended by senior officials from Ministry of Climate Change, Planning Commission, Economic Affairs Division, other line departments, Governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan and UNDP.

The project will help in scaled-up early warning systems, training on glacial lake outburst flood preparedness and response, and creation of new protective infrastructure in the most vulnerable rural communities in the high-altitude regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
