Federal Flood Commission warns of high floods in Jhelum and Chenab Rivers

ISLAMABAD, Aug 7 (APP): The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that
a peak of high to very high flood level is expected in River Jhelum at Mangla (Inflow) and high flood in River Chenab at Marala, Khanki & Qadirabad during the next 24 hours.
According to daily FFC report on Sunday presently, River Indus at
Tarbela and Guddu and River Kabul at Warsak are flowing in Low Flood, while other main rivers including Rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are flowing normal.
The river flows and reservoir elevations indicates that Tarbela & Mangla
reservoirs are at elevations of 1526.90 feet and 1236.50 feet respectively, which are 23.10 feet & 5.50 feet below their respective Maximum Conservation Levels of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.
The combined live storage capacity of Tarbela, Chashma & Mangla
reservoirs is 12.468 MAF as compared to last year�s 13.425 MAF.
According to Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, yesterday's trough of
Westerly Wave still persists over Northern parts of the country, whereas, yesterday's Monsoon Low Pressure Area also persists over Northeastern Madhya Pradesh (India).
Seasonal Low continues to prevail over Northern Balochistan. Moderate
moist current from Bay of Bengal is penetrating into upper parts of country upto 5000 feet.
As predicted by the Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, scattered
thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls and one or two very heavy falls is expected over the upper catchments of Rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi & Sutlej during the next 24 hours.
Scattered thunderstorm/rain may also occur over the upper catchments of
River Indus including Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala Lahore & Bahawalpur Divisions, besides, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Kohat & D.I. Khan Divisions) and Northeastern Balochistan during the same period, which may generate flash flood flows in local nullahs (the tributaries of Rivers Chenab & Ravi) and Hill Torrents of D.G. Khan & Kohat Divisions during the next 24 days.
Scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over
the upper catchments of all major rivers including Northern & Northeastern Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during 8 th - 10th August 2016.
Significant rainfall events reported by the Flood Forecasting Division,
Lahore during the past 24 hours, include; Hyderabad (City=112 mm & Airport=77 mm), Kotli=58 mm, Mirpur Khas=39 mm, Karachi (Masroor=38 mm, North Karachi=22 mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed=10 mm), Sialkot (Cantt)=37 mm), Balakot=34 mm, Palandri =29 mm, Muzaffarabad=26 mm, Risalpur & Garhidupatta=25 mm each, Noorpur Thal=23 mm, Mangla=22 mm, Murree=21 mm, Lahore (Johar Town=18 mm), Shaheed Benazirabad=18 mm, Kasur=17 mm, D.G. Khan (Zain Sanghar)=15 mm, Chakwal & Hattian Bala=15 mm each, Aik Nullah (Ura), Domel & Chhor=14 mm each, Chattar Kallas=13 mm & Talhatta=11 mm.
