Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan's cricket team, has once again left his mark in the annals of cricket history, this time by surpassing a significant milestone previously held by India's Virat Kohli. Babar Azam has now become the fastest captain to reach the impressive milestone of 2000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket. He achieved this remarkable feat in just 31 innings, outshining Virat Kohli, who had taken 36 innings to accumulate 2000 ODI runs as a captain.
This achievement solidifies Babar's status as one of the world's premier cricket captains.
Following Babar Azam on the list are South Africa's AB de Villiers, who reached this milestone in 41 innings, and Australia's Michael Clarke, who achieved it in 47 innings. Babar's incredible journey to this record-breaking accomplishment was witnessed during the Super Four game of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh, where he reached six runs, adding another feather to his cap at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
Notably, just last week, Babar showcased his exceptional batting skills by scoring a magnificent 151 runs from only 131 deliveries during the opening game of the Asia Cup. This outstanding performance allowed him to surpass South Africa's legendary Hashim Amla as the fastest player in cricket history to reach 19 ODI centuries.
Babar accomplished this milestone in just 102 ODI innings, besting Amla's previous record of 104 innings. During his entertaining innings, Babar hit 14 fours and four massive sixes, resulting in numerous records tumbling in his wake.
The 151 runs he scored in that game also marked a significant achievement in the context of the Asia Cup, making it the second-highest score ever achieved in the tournament, second only to Virat Kohli's 183 against Pakistan in 2012. This remarkable innings by Babar Azam not only solidified his place in cricket history but also set a new standard for captaincy at the Asia Cup, surpassing the previous best performance by a captain, which was Kohli's 136 against Bangladesh in 2014
