KASHMOR: Pakistan was plunged into darkness after a key power transmission line broke down and immense smog on Sunday at the Guddu Thermal Power Plant, the latest reminder of the country’s crippling energy crisis.

The tripping of four units caused suspension of electricity after the 500KV transmission line broke down at the Guddu Thermal Power Plant in various areas including Multan and Bahawalpur.

Authorities said the units will be restored as soon as the transmission line is repaired.

It is one of the oldest power plants in the country, and has three large transmission lines that feed its output to Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

Pakistan’s electricity distribution system is complex and a major fault at one section often leads to chain reactions and breakdowns of power generation and transmission.
