Pakistan Army to acquire FD 2000 long range Air Defence Missile System: Sources

RAWALPINDI - Pakistan is considering to procure FD-2000, long-range air defense missiles from China.

The news has surfaced after the Russian News Agency TASS, while citing an official of Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP), reported that Pakistan is mulling over the feasibility of procuring three to four FD-2000 long-range SAM systems to meet its long-range air defense requirements.

According to the media reports, FD-2000 has a maximum engagement range of 125 km. It is an export variant of the HQ-9 – the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) new generation primary long-range SAM system on sea and land.

The long SAM has a semi-active radar-homing (SARH) seeker, a reaction time of 15 seconds, and a maximum speed of Mach 4.2. ------------------------------

Furthermore, Pakistan Army has reportedly taken delivery of the earlier procured nine LY-80 systems. Notably, Pakistan Army had formally inducted LY-80 in March 2017. According to TASS, the said systems are operational now.

Along with expanding its air defense coverage, Pakistan seems to be improving its short-range air defense (VSHORAD) capabilities as well.

TASS also maintained, while citing an official of Pakistan Ministry of Defense, that the country inducted 200 QW-18-man-portable air defense (MANPAD) launchers from China. Moreover, it is working on the manufacture of QW-18 domestically under license.
