KABUL - Residents of Faryab province, in the north of Afghanistan, on Friday claimed that at least 10 civilians were killed and four others wounded in an airstrike in Jawzjan’s Darzab district, TOLO News has reported.
The residents claimed that the airstrike was carried out by foreign forces.
The Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan has yet to confirm the airstrike.
The residents said they went to Jawzjan to mediate the release of an imam who was taken hostage by Daesh and was under custody in Qari Hekmatullah, a designated commander of Daesh, house in the area, which was targeted by the airstrike.
The residents claimed that the imam was abducted from Faryab’s Shirin Tagab district and was taken to Jawzjan.
At least 14 people from Shirin Tagab and Darzab districts went to meet Hekmatullah to secure the release of the imam.
Those wounded in the alleged airstrike said Daesh militants were also killed in the airstrike.
“After sitting in the room and drinking tea, the ceiling collapsed and we did not realize what happened next. We had went there for mediation. Four people have been wounded and 10 others killed,” Akbar, a resident of Faryab, who sustained injuries in the incident, said.
“It is not good that they have attacked us,” Sharif, another resident of Faryab said.
This is not the first airstrike that leaves civilians dead and wounded.
The United Nations office in Afghanistan recently said the number of civilian fatalities has increased following the rise in airstrikes.
Faryab officials have not commented on the report so far.
