In Islamabad, the National Assembly was informed that over 20,000 Pakistanis are currently imprisoned in 88 countries around the world. During the National Assembly session, it was revealed that among these prisoners, 68 individuals are facing the death penalty.
The reasons for their imprisonment vary widely, including charges related to terrorism, murder, and drug smuggling. The largest number of these prisoners are held in the United Arab Emirates (5,292), Saudi Arabia (10,432), and Malaysia (463). Other countries where Pakistani nationals are detained include the United Kingdom, Oman, Turkey, Bahrain, Greece, China, Germany, Iraq, the United States, Sri Lanka, Spain, Afghanistan, South Africa, and France.
A detailed breakdown of the number of Pakistanis imprisoned in various countries is as follows: UAE (5,292), Saudi Arabia (10,432), Malaysia (463), UK (321), Oman (578), Turkey (387), Bahrain (371), Greece (598), China (406), Germany (90), Iraq (40), USA (114), Sri Lanka (89), Spain (92), Afghanistan (85), South Africa (48), and France (186).
In addition to this, earlier in the day, Parliamentary Secretary for Overseas Pakistanis, Ehsan Ul Haq Bajwa, informed the National Assembly that the government had sent 860,000 Pakistanis abroad for employment in 2023. He emphasized that the selection process for these workers is rigorous, ensuring that only qualified candidates are sent, thereby reducing the likelihood of their involvement in illegal activities such as begging.
