Special Terrorism Financing Cell being established in Islamabad

Special Terrorism Financing Cell being established in Islamabad

A specialized investigative unit has been established within the Anti-Terrorism Department of Islamabad Capital Police, tasked with delving into cases linked to the financing of terrorism and extremism, as reported by ARY News. This significant development has emerged under the specific directives of Federal Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who has prompted the Islamabad Capital City Police Officer (ICCPO), Dr. Akbar Naseer Khan, to take the lead in forming this dedicated cell.

According to a police spokesperson, the individual entrusted with overseeing this cell will hold the rank of Grade 17, functioning under the direct supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). Emphasizing its commitment to adherence to international standards, the ICCPO has indicated that this cell will actively seek collaboration with other law enforcement agencies when conducting specialized investigations.

Moreover, it has been underscored by the ICCPO that stringent legal measures will be applied against those individuals found to be involved in the financing of terrorism and extremism. This proactive stance reflects the authorities' determination to curb the flow of funds to extremist elements within society.

Prior to this initiative, ICCPO Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan had pioneered the establishment of an anti-terrorism and extremism unit within the CTD—a pioneering effort in Pakistan. This unit primarily focuses on countering extremism within educational institutions and schools in Islamabad, with dedicated teams from the Capital Police actively engaged in these efforts.

Additionally, the Anti-Extremism Unit assumes responsibility for monitoring sermons delivered in mosques, scrutinizing political, linguistic, religious, and sectarian content on social media platforms and websites, and identifying individuals implicated in crimes associated with extremism. This multifaceted approach underscores the commitment of Islamabad's law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism and extremism at their roots within the community.
