Extradition of Pakistani national to America involved in New York City attack case stopped

ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Friday stopped the extradition of a Pakistani citizen to America on charges of his alleged involvement in planning an attack in New York City.

The court appointed an inquiry magistrate to decide the matter within 60 days after hearing US government representative and accused's counsel.

The order read that American Investigation Officer (IO) associate with this case should appear before Magistrate in Pakistan along with the evidence and documents concerned. The court further stated that any citizen could not be handed over to any country based on a postal correspondence between Pakistan and Washington.

Justice Mohsin Akhter Kiyani of IHC announced the verdict which was reserved on April 8, on petition of Haroon challenging extradition of his son Talha Haroon to US government. The petitioner had stated in his plea that there were no evidence regarding involvement of his son in planning attack in US city.

Haroon, 19, was arrested in Pakistan in 2016 after US authorities identified him as one of three men, along with a Canadian citizen and a man from the Philippines, planning attacks on Manhattan’s Times Square and the city’s subway.

An Additional Deputy Commissioner General (ADCG) had ordered to extradite Talha to US after going through the matter.
