KARACHI: (APP) SSGC's engineers and technicians team along with the contractor, M/s. China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau, China, on Friday completed a challenging task by successfully laying 2.1 Km of 42" diameter gas pipeline at around 45 meters (148 feet) depth at the Mighty River Indus through Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process.
A Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) statement here on Friday said that the HDD of this magnitude has been carried out for the first time in Pakistan and is a unique project in itself.
It said that this is a part of the mega Regasified Liquified Natural Gas-RLNG-2 project, which is taking place in compliance of the directives from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources (MPNR).
According to these directives, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited is in the process of implementing RLNG-2 Pipeline Project i.e. laying of 42” diameter x 340 Km pipeline from SMS Pakland to MVA-Nara for transporting 1.2 BCF RLNG with requisite pressure of 1,115 psig at Sawan (Sindh).
This pipeline along the way has to cross River Indus at Kotri Barrage besides several other crossing like Rohri Canal, Naseer, Bhomphar, Sui Kandhar Canal excreta. However, the River Indus was the largest crossing of this mega pipeline project and one of the largest crossing through Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process in the country.
This feat was achieved through deployment of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), a modern and ideal process for speedy laying of pipeline on economic grounds without impacting the environment. HDD is a trenchless technology which is performed without disturbing the existing soil condition.
The contract of HDD project at River Indus was awarded to M/s. China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau, one of the renowned international pipeline construction company, through an open / competitive bidding process, it added.
