Important development reported in LHC over General Elections

On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) initiated legal proceedings to ensure that general elections in Pakistan take place within a 90-day timefram. The LHC's decision came as a response to a petition filed by Barrister Muqsat Saleem, prompting the court to issue notices to several respondents, including the Election Commission of Pakistan and the President of Pakistan.
Remarkably, during the court proceedings, it was noted that no political party had demonstrated a keen interest in ensuring the conduction of elections within this 90-day window, as the plea had been submitted by an individual. Barrister Muqsat Saleem's plea contended that scheduling general elections for January constituted a 'violation' of the constitution and the court's directives.
Furthermore, the petition urged the court to instruct President Arif Alvi to announce the election date while simultaneously revoking the notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan pertaining to elections in January. It is worth noting that just the previous month, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had formally announced its intention to hold the general elections during the final week of January 2024.
In response to these developments, the Lahore High Court has embarked on a legal journey to address the crucial issue of the election timeline, with Barrister Muqsat Saleem's plea serving as a pivotal point of contention in this ongoing judicial process.
